CASE STUDIES

Ontario Power Generation - Case Study

Ontario Power Generation wished to perform strategic assessments of the material handling system at its Lambton plant. It wanted to ascertain the coal demand at the Power Plant for different generation plans.

Visual8 created a simulation model that included all conveyors, storage facilities and units in order to assist generation of the Power Plant demand. The model also provided the flexibility to assess the impacts of different coal delivery strategies, and altering the coal path availability.

This simulation model took into account:
  1. Various conveyor routes and switch gates that could be employed to transport the coal to the power plant units, according to the basic coal delivery rules
  2. Capacities, lengths, speeds and running costs of conveyors
  3. Stackers, reclaimers and tracker/scrapers.
The simulation model tracked the costs of handling the coal throughout the process, as well as coal flows, materials handling, and demurrage calculations, for all equipment.

Power Utility Plant - Case Study

Energy Simulation graphic Visual8 created a power dispatch simulation and monitoring system for a major Mexican utility (our client would like to remain anonymous). This system provided detailed monitoring of supply and demand as metered to its customers. Using the system, dispatchers optimized their return on generated power by simulating to short-term and long-term buy or sell options.

ENERGY SIMULATION BENEFITS

Typical Energy Models:

  • Fuels Logistics Management
  • Process Control and Improvement
  • Power Dispatch Analysis
  • Power Requirements Planning

Types of Problems We Resolve:

  • Analyze capacity constraints
  • Investigate "best practices"
  • Monitor and forecast supply and demand as metered to customers

"During the re-design process of our production line, we found SIMUL8 to be a very good tool to help us verify the line design. This verification process allowed us to see the line operating in the simulation package, identify weak points in the design and improve the design before actually starting the re-layout."
